"The care of the earth is our most ancient and most worthy and, after all, our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it, and to foster its renewal, is our only legitimate hope." - Wendell Berry

Rangeland Health

Western Landowners Alliance has initiated a collaborative rangeland monitoring study in New Mexico to help ranchers better evaluate the results of management actions. Partners in the project include the Quivira Coalition, Open Range Consulting and the Thornburg Foundation. Using an approach developed by Gregg Simonds, a long-time rangeland management professional, satellite imagery and field data are collected and analyzed to determine trends in bare ground exposure and vegetative cover over the past several decades. This information is then combined with information and data from ranch managers to assess the impacts of various management practices on rangeland health.
